Scams are on the rise and ATO related scams are no exception.

The financial year 2022-2023 saw an overall 25% increase in scams being reported to the ATO.

Most scams claiming to be from the ATO are by SMS or email. The statistics indicate a whopping 414% increase in ATO related scam activity by SMS.

Interestingly though, it seems people are getting more adept at spotting a potential scammer, ATO data suggesting a decrease in the money actually paid out to scammers had decreased in the 2023 financial year by 25%.

The ATO advises that if you are in any doubt, do not respond they have a dedicated phone number to report potential scams 1800 008 540 and a website with information of the latest scams being reported.  ATO Scam Alerts & Advice
